Photo Post: 10.31.08 Infusion

Did you have a Happy Halloween? I hope so. My town is weird. Trick-or-Treating is always on October 30th because our Halloween Parade, which is listed in the Guiness Book Of World Records as the 2nd largest Halloween Parade in THE WORLD, is on the 31st.  And that is something I find ridiculous since the parade is mostly made up of firetrucks and crappy high school bands. So yes, Halloween is over and I'm okay with that. The lack of creative costumes in recent years has made me sad. My Halloween [the real one, on the 31st, not the fake parade one] was spent at the hospital for another infusion. The highlight? Well, besides not having a reaction [which is always a dice roll], they brought in a parade of therapeutic dogs IN COSTUME. Through the past year of treatment, I've met two of the therapeutic doggers. Yesterday, I met a total of TEN! I only was able to get a few pictures though. Those poor doggers - dressed as devils, pumpkins, clowns - the look in their eyes says "MY SPIRIT HAS BEEN BROKEN JUST TO CHEER UP YOU INVALIDS!"

Dogger

Dogger!

Grime

The grime on the bottom of my I.V. stand makes me insane the entire time I am there.

Appetizer

Main course.

Just me.

I'm usually alone for a while. They schedule me to start at 8:00am because if I have a reaction [which happens sometimes], I end up there for about 7-9 hours. No reactions means I am done in about 5 hours.

My buddy

This is my buddy. He keeps me company while I pee. [and by that I mean I have to DRAG it with me, then try to squat and hover approx. 3 inches above the toilet bowl without letting any tubes get caught in my zipper when I'm done.]

August 8th was yet another infusion day for me. They schedule me early in case I have a reaction. A reaction will drag out my infusion from 7-9 hours so the earlier I get started, the better. I didn't have a full-blown reaction [thankfully] but at one of my vitals check [they check me every 15 minutes], my pulse and heart rate were high, indicating a possible reaction was about to occur. So, they shut my I.V. off for about 20 minutes. This infusion lasted about 5 hours. As always, the nurses at the J. Phillip Citta Cancer & Infusion Suite @ Community Hospital were wonderful. I adore them.

Infusion: 8-08-08

When I arrived, I was the only one on my side of the room. The room is a semi-circle of chairs and an identical set up is on the other side of the room, separated by the nurse's station. This is the view from where I was sitting, across the semi-circle.

Infusion: 8-08-08

The rest of the semi-circle. Yup. Still the only person here.

The plasma above my chair. I normally don't watch TV during my infusions because each chair has a TV and there are usually older people who have their volumes set very high, making it hard to watch anything. Typically, I read a book. And by "read a book" I mean that I stare at the same paragraph while my head bobs because my pre-meds make me sleepy. Since I was alone at this point, I was watching TV. While that is a commercial, I will confess: I was watching the Jonas Brothers perform. I think it was on Good Morning America. Can't remember. Don't judge me.

Infusion: 8-08-08

Still alone on my side of the room, which is extremely unusual. Those are my feet. Aren't they cute? I think so. Maybe by writing about my cute feet, I can raise my stats. There are a lot of freaks on the Internet.

Infusion: 8-08-08

Infusion: 8-08-08

By 9:00am, more people started filling up the room. I am undoubtedly always the youngest person there, as evident by the wheelchairs and walkers. Almost every person brings a "guest" but I usually fly solo. I hate to make J. stay there for all that time.

Infusion: 8-08-08

Sometimes an air bubble gets into the I.V. line. When that happens, the I.V. starts filling with blood. My machine begins to beep like crazy and a nurse will come over pronto. They usually will clear the I.V. line of blood by injecting a saline flush in. It's gross because as soon as it is flushed into the I.V. line, you taste an awful chemical in your mouth/throat. At least that dissipates quickly; the chemical taste I'm left with in my mouth and on my gums after the entire treatment usually lasts for a day or two. No amount of toothpaste or mouthwash can get rid of it.
